Once upon a time, Buddha was walking with a few of his disciples from one town to another. While they were on their journey, they came across a lake and decided to take a rest there. Buddha then asked one of his disciples to fetch some water from the lake.
The disciple walked up to the lake and noticed some people washing clothes in it. At the same time, a bullock cart crossed through the lake, making the water muddy and dirty. The disciple thought, "How can I give this dirty water to Buddha?"
He returned to Buddha and said, "My lord, the water in the lake is very muddy and dirty. It is not fit to drink."
After some time, Buddha asked the same disciple to go back to the lake and fetch some water. The disciple went back to the lake and saw that the dirt and mud had settled down, leaving the water clean. He collected some water in a pot and brought it back to Buddha.
Buddha looked at the disciple and said, "See how the water became clear when you let it be. The mud settled down on its own. It is the same with our mind. When it is disturbed, let it be. Give it time, and it will settle down on its own."
